Minister for Water Resources, Ambati Rambabu, has announced that the 25th International Congress on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) and the 74th International Executive Council Meeting (IEC) will be hosted in Visakhapatnam city. The events are scheduled to take place from November 1 to 8. There is a possibility that the International Congress will be inaugurated by either President of India, Droupadi Murumu, or Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 2.
The announcement was made by Minister Ambati Rambabu during the brochure release ceremony held at the camp office in Vijayawada on Thursday.
The organising committee for the events comprises the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the Indian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (INCID), the Central Water Commission, and the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The ICID, established in 1950 with its headquarters in New Delhi, boasts a membership of 78 countries, representing 95 percent of the world’s irrigated and drainage areas. Rambabu shared that the congress is expected to be attended by 500 international delegates and 700 local delegates. The department is leaving no stone unturned in making elaborate arrangements to ensure the success of these prestigious meetings.
ICID Vice President and Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Dr. K Yella Reddy, described the ICID as a prominent scientific, technical, not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to promoting ‘Sustainable Agricultural Water Management’ through international cooperation in irrigation, drainage, and flood management. He also noted that the last meeting was held in Australia in 2020, and it is now India’s turn to host the event.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of Water Resources Department Principal Secretary, Sashi Bhushan Kumar, Engineer in Chief (ENC), C Narayana Reddy, and other dignitaries.
