The Anantapur district police have cracked the case of the brutal murder of an Intermediate student, with the arrest of the accused, Naresh.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, District Superintendent of Police (SP) Jagadish stated that Naresh and the deceased, Yelukala Tanmai, had been friends for the past few months. Tanmai was a resident of Ramakrishna Colony in Anantapur.
On 3 June, Naresh took Tanmai on his motorbike to the outskirts of the town. There, she reportedly insisted that he marry her. However, Naresh, who is already married, explained that it was not possible. A heated argument ensued, during which Naresh, in a fit of rage, murdered her by crushing her head with a boulder.
The SP announced the suspension of the Circle Inspector of One Town Police Station for dereliction of duty. He also said that the property of the accused’s family would be seized and all government welfare benefits to the family would be withdrawn.
The parents of the deceased told the media that, although they had lodged a complaint when their daughter went missing, the police failed to act promptly.
The brutal murder of Tanmai has shocked the district and sparked widespread outrage, particularly among women. The Chief Minister and the Home Minister have spoken to the SP and instructed the police to ensure swift justice by apprehending all involved.
