A student from RSR Engineering College in Kavali, Nellore district, allegedly committed suicide due to ragging and harassment by his fellow students.

The deceased was identified as T Pradeep Kumar (20), a native of Shakavaram of Ananthasagaram mandal in Nellore.

He jumped in front of a moving train and was crushed to death, unable to bear the torment inflicted upon him. Railway Police have registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC (for suspicious death). The student’s family protested in front of the college on Monday alleging that it was ragging that led to their son’s death.

According to K Srinivasa Chary, CI, GRP, Nellore, they would investigate the complaint of ragging by the deceased father, T Penchulaiah, an autorickshaw driver.

The railway police said the loco pilot of Jasidih-Tambaram Weekly SF Express informed the railway authorities and lodged a complaint with the railway police on Saturday night stating that a youth died after being hit by the train. Railway police shifted the body to Kavali Government Hospital for post-mortem.

The mother of Pradeep said he was staying in the college hostel for the last two years.

She said a few days ago her son called her over the phone and said a few students were harassing him.

When she said she would come to the college to complain about the harassment, Pradeep prevented her.

She alleged that a few students had harassed Pradeep to buy them liquor and biryani.

The college management says that around 20 days ago, Pradeep’s parents were summoned to the college to brief them about his academic performance and attendance as part of a parent-teacher meeting.

Pradeep had nine backlog subjects, five in the first year and four in the second. The management said neither Pradeep nor his parents had complained about ragging although they visited the college twice in recent days. “Now, we will conduct an inquiry and action will be taken after receiving the report,” it said.
