Telangana witnessed less rain in August due to the impact of El Nino. After 2014, this is possibly the driest August so far.
Nagarkurnool, Nalgonda, Khammam and Suryapet witnessed less than normal rainfall. Nagarkurnool got 253.9 mm rain against 300.5 mm last year, Nalgonda 274.8 mm against 321.3 mm, Suryapet got 385.2 mm rain against the normal of 415.8 mm and Khammam got 524.3 mm against 578.9 mm.
Jogulamba Gadwal got 288.1 mm against the normal of 284 mm. Except for the week beginning August 2, there was an excess rain of 179% causing floods. The remaining weeks of August were mostly rain deficit. The week beginning August 9 had a shortage of 92%. August 16: minus 81% and August 23 is – 11% deficient.
The State’s total rainfall from June 1 to August 25 is 588.4 mm against the normal of 489.6 mm with a deviation of 20%. Out of 594 mandals, 6% (39) received large excess, 44% of mandals (268) received excess, 42% mandals (254) received normal and 8% of mandals (51) suffered a deficit.
Skymet Weather said, “El Nino hit August rainfall. September too is on tenterhooks. El Nino impact affected the monsoon in August. There is a large deficiency of above 30% and is likely to increase further in this month’s closing days.
Seasonal rainfall is below normal with a shortfall of 7% in Long long-period average (LPA). El Nino will persist throughout the fall of this year and in the northern hemisphere winter.”
