Harrowing tales of sexual harassment of minor girls and ill-treatment of migrant workers surfaced from inside a brick kiln at Daraga Thanda under Narayakhed mandal on Wednesday.
Following the alarm raised by workers, the officials of Child Protection Cell and Labour swung into action on Wednesday and rescued 54 migrant workers, including seven minor girls from the clutches of the owners of the brick kiln, the officials said. The migrant workers hailed from Odisha. Most of the brick kilns employ migrant workers and the people in the State are reluctant to work in the kilns.
The entire sordid tale came to light following Odisha Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra informing the officials of the Telangana State Labour Department officials. The relatives of the migrant workers approached the Odisha Chief Secretary for help.
The police arrested the brick kiln owners on the charge of harassing minor girls sexually. They were also charged with meting out ill-treatment to workers.
The seven minor girls were shifted to Sakhi Centre in Sangareddy.
Narayakhed police registered a case and an investigation is on. The police were accused of being lax in busting the brick kiln gang and it brought a bad name to the government.
