The Union Home secretary directed the Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary KS Jawahar Reddy to take action against DGP PV Sunil Kumar, who was recently removed from the post of CID chief.

Significantly, no time limit was set to take action against Sunil Kumar. A lawyer Gudapati Lakshminarayana complained to the Union Home Ministry against Sunil Kumar for participating in programmes creating hatred between two religions.

YSRCP rebel MP Raghu Rama Krishna Raju also complained to the privilege committee of the Parliament on the custodial torture. Since then, Raju has written many letters to the Union Home Ministry officials regarding the custodial torture.

The Legal Right Observatory organisation complained to the Union Home Ministry against Sunil Kumar that being a Hindu by religion and Mala by caste, Sunil Kumar is practising Christianity and making speeches against Hindus. The organisation also sent visuals of the Ambedkar India Mission to which Sunil Kumar is said to be affiliated as evidence.

The Union Home Ministry wrote to then Chief Secretary Adityanath Das to initiate action against Sunil Kumar but the then CS did not take action. However, the incumbent Chief Secretary Jawahar Reddy directed DGP Rajendranath Reddy to take action against Sunil Kumar.

Realising that the Union Home Ministry has taken the Sunil Kumar issue seriously, the Jagan government has sacked Sunil Kumar from the CID chief post. He has not been given posting so far.

According to sources, Sunil Kumar is presently in the US.

Under Section 5 of the District Police Act, the DGP can take action against the DG-level officer, a senior official said. Interestingly, the incumbent DGP Rajendranath Reddy is not a full-fledged DGP as he is only in-charge of DGP.

The DGP is to set up a committee to inquire into the complaints of Sunil Kumar but the DGP has not set up the committee. Additional SP level officers inquired into the corruption allegations on the then Additional DGP AB Venkateswara Rao and the same officers could inquire into the complaints against Sunil Kumar, the official opined.
