With respiratory diseases on the rise, it is essential to diagnose the diseases early and accurately. Endo bronchial ultrasonography (EBUS) is a technique where a pulmonologist introduces a scope with an attached ultrasound probe into the lungs via the mouth and visualises the insides of the lungs and airways, said experts gathered at Yashoda Hospitals, along with Indian Association of Bronchology. A one-day International Conference and live workshop were organized on Sunday.
This enables the doctors to see the abnormality directly and obtain samples precisely from the abnormal areas. Use of EBUS helps to diagnose diseases early and thereby improve patient outcomes. Diseases such as lung cancer and tuberculosis, both of which are rampant in India, can be diagnosed with precision. There are two types of EBUS – Linear EBUS (used to sample central lesions) and radial EBUS (used to sample peripheral lung lesions) which are used routinely.
Department of Pulmonology at Yashoda Hospitals, headed by Dr V Nagarjuna Maturu has been instrumental in initiating and promoting the use of EBUS in our State.
With an experience of more than 12 years in performing EBUS procedures, the department at Yashoda Hytec City performs the highest EBUS procedures in twin Telugu states every year.
This programme was attended by over 500 doctors from across South India. More than 50 faculty from across the country and globe participated in the one-day programme and imparted skills to the doctors. Modifications of EBUS procedure have been introduced. These include newer needles, newer scopes and newer biopsy techniques.
